There has been a Tavern on the property since 1733, when the first license for a Tavern at Hanover Courthouse was issued. The existing Tavern was built in stages and includes more than 12,000 square feet on three floors. The earliest surviving portion of this building dates back to 1791, with additions in the 1820’s, 1830’s and the 1990’s.

Such historical figures as George Washington, Lord Cornwallis, Marquis de Lafayette, Patrick Henry, P.T. Barnum, and even Edgar Allen Poe graced the halls of Hanover Tavern. During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate troops utilized the Tavern.

Additionally, we will be checking everyone’s temperature at the door. We ask that anyone who has been exposed to someone suspected of having COVID-19 within 14 days leading up to the event, to please stay home. Refunds will be issued if either situation occurs.
